12 THINGS I WISH I KNEW WHEN STARTING MY FITNESS JOURNEY
You can not outwork a bad diet. You can consume 100 calories in 10 seconds, yet it would take you 10 minutes to 'burn off'. You will waste so much time thinking you can work harder than your fork.
Resistance training is essential. No matter your age or goal, you have to lift a weight of some kind, some way.
Resistance training does not make you 'manly'. It is incredibly hard (and requires some testosterone) to achieve a bulky figure as such.
Water is essential. If you don't drink enough water, you won't see changes. I don't even care if you drink other things (that's a whole nother story), but you need to be drinking your water goal, too!
Protein is essential. It will keep you full and rebuild your muscles. At least 100g per day on average.
Cardio should be enjoyable. If you hate running, don't go run. Find something you enjoy to increase your heart rate.
Cardio is not the key to fat loss. Again, it is nutrition.
Calories control your weight. What those calories are made of control your body composition. But, your actual weight is controlled by your caloric intake VS your caloric burn.
Your body NEEDS calories. I thought calories were only if I were 'hungry' or not and therefore I could starve/go without. Your organs need calories for basic function.
Cutting your favorite foods never works. Learn the caloric count and proper portion control of fitting your favorite foods into your daily/weekly eating habits. Life is short, eat cake.
You do not have to workout 1 hour every single day of the week. If you only have time for a 15 minute workout, do a 15 minute workout (that is all that I do, actually!)
It is not one size fits all. Genetics, lifestyle, age all play a factor. Just because it works for someone else, doesn't mean it will work for (or that you will look like) that person.
We live in a world overflowing with misinformation - to make a quick sale they want you to buy this exact plan, or eat this exact thing. At the end of the day, the magic is in moving your body more often than not and it is up to you to find what you enjoy to do so. Eat from the Earth as much as you can and minimize artificial food-like items that we are all used to on the shelf. Prioritize protein and water. I am proud of you for starting! That's the hardest part. Now don't stop!
